LinkedIn Masterclass: hOW TO SEND dm’S THAT GET A RESPONSE

A carefully crafted DM is getting to be as valuable as a phone call these days.. Used correctly they are a gamechanger Used poorly and you'll get ignored or B-B-B-Blocked I'm a menace in the DM's and use them to book all my meetings Here's what not to do...

Don’t

1. The 'Copy & Paste' DM

"Hi X, I hope this message finds you well"........ DEEP BREATH 10,000 LINES OF CUT AND PASTE TEXT It feels like you've pinned me down and forced me to read your crappy brochure. STAAAHP

2. The 'Book in MY Calender' DM

This is when you send a link to YOUR calendar. Are you more important than the prospect? It's such an ego-driven move to expect a cold prospect to do the work to book the meeting. Don't do it.

3. The 'Hi' DM

"Hi How r u?" I mean seriously.???! are we 15 yrs old? What do you want me to do with a "Hi"? "am gud how r u?" No high-level business deal starts with a "Hi" DM. Seriously, stop doing this.

Bonus Don't - The "?" DM follow up

If you put "Hi" Then wait a few days and drop a.. "?" You are going straight to hell. It's the laziest attempt at a follow-up and is just rude. Nope, nope, nope.

OK, so we've got the dont’s out of the way but you knew all those right? Right? Here are 4 certified banger DM templates I use on repeat that work for me so they'll definitely work for you too..

DO

1. The 'How can I help you?' DM

“Hi X, I think we could generate some very high-value traffic and leads to (company). We've helped over (impressive stat you've done for someone just like them) Let me know if you'd like to grab a coffee or discuss in more detail. (name)"

Why does it work?

  • You are leading with what you can do for them

  • The specific and relevant result is the bait

  • Sprinkle on some social proof

  • Soft-close to not seem pushy

  • It’s short and informal

2. The 'Case Study' DM

“Hi X, Last month we achieved over (insert ROI) for (insert similar customer) with our (insert service) I think we might be able to do the same for you and would love to see if it is something you might be interested in exploring? (name)”

Why does it work?

  • You get straight to the point (no BS)

  • You lead with specifics and its relateable

  • Send this to high-level Directors why?

  • Their time is extremely valuable

  • It's short (seeing a pattern here?)

3. The 'Ask the Expert' DM

“Hi X, I'm writing an article on LinkedIn with insights from experts in the (insert industry they work in). I'd love to include insights from you if you're able to spare a couple of minutes? (name)”

Why does it work?

  • This DM works as it is an opener for a conversation

  • It's a different angle for a call

  • Flattery works if it’s sincere

  • It's an opportunity for content for an article that boosts their brand

  • It's ........you guessed its short

4. The 'I liked your content' DM

“Hi X, I loved your post today about how (read their content understand it and pick a nuanced point) What do you think (authentic question about something you are actually interested in knowing) (name)”

Why does it work?

  • I think this one is getting a little played out

  • BUT it still works if it is authentic

  • Don't fake it

  • We can smell a sales liar and you'll get found out

  • Authenticity is key

5. The 'Picture or Video DM"

I learnt this from @linkedin_king

(Awesome tip James thanks!). There are ways to automate this yes... To try it out for yourself ...

  • Take a snap of yourself with a blank whiteboard

  • Load it into Canva

  • Add a relevant question

5. The 'Picture or Video DM" Continued

With Video keep them short and punchy (30seconds - 2min) - Smile - Look at the lens - Be confident and positive - Practice practice practice - Put a little bullet point script up next to the camera lens -Send!

Why does it work?

  • It's hyper-personalised

  • The effort will impress the prospect

  • You get to see you're a real human being behind the DM

  • You'll set yourself above the noise

Et Voila - Go use these and come back and tell me how you did!
