Read this to find your purpose in life..
If you've ever felt like you had no direction in life this is for you.
Finding your purpose is tough.
First of all you have to live "on purpose" but how do you do that?
Let's find out...
Find your "why"
Many business "gurus" take credit for this but it was Friedrich Nietzsche who once said.
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
To put it simply...
You'll do anything if you have a good enough reason to do it.
Most people live without purpose and react to whatever the world throws at them.
Finding out "your why" is a really big deal.
Here are 8 steps you can take to find out yours...
1/ Understand your core values
Core values are deeply held beliefs that reside inside all of us.
They define who you are as a person.
Just having an understanding that other people have values different from your own will naturally create compassion.
Some will value freedom above all else.
Some will value safety.
This will cause friction in daily life.
Not everyone will think the same as you do and have the same core values and that's totally normal and a natural part of life.
A great exercise to understand your own is to
- grab a piece of paper and a pen
- Google "50 core values"
Write down the ones that stand out to you.
Shorten that list to 10, then down to 5.
It'll be tough but worth it.
Once you have 5 values you absolutely can not live without.
Write them somewhere you can see them and look at them daily as a reminder
Mine are..
- Growth
- Honesty
- Courage
- Discipline
- Independence
Once you have them written down you can start to...
2/ Develop Boundaries
Did you know that having values is the beginning of setting strong and clear boundaries?
Boundaries are essential for self-protection.
Once you have boundaries you can develop a moral philosophy.
But why is that important?
When you know...
- what you value
- what you stand for
- what is important to you
- what you can't do without
You will naturally be purposeful and assertive and raise your standards for how you live your life.
99% of people in the world today show up with
- No clear values
- No Boundaries
so of course they have no purpose and are lost.
With these two steps alone you put yourself in elite company.
3/ Undo your brainwashing
There's no kind way to say this but we are all living under a certain amount of brainwashing (me included).
Brainwashing is very sophisticated and subtle these days but is very much alive and well in 2022.
If you really want to live "on purpose" then you are going to have to do some work on yourself to make some space to think clearly.
You may need to look into...
Internal
- Childhood trauma
- Unprocessed emotions
- Inter-generational trauma
then…
External
- Brainwashing from politics
- Brainwashing from marketing
- Brainwashing from films
All of the above shape the way you see the world and cause a constant blurring of reality.
They blur the idea of what the purpose of life is and how you are supposed to live.
They blur...
- What love is
- What health is
- What relationships should look like
- What your contribution to society should be
This gives you a screwed-up view of reality that will leave you lost and confused.
It's totally healthy to create space and question thoughts you have compassionately.
Often you'll find the source of that thought is a parent or just some bullshit you heard on the news.
4/ Setting an intention for the day
Setting goals is great (obviously).
But setting an intentional direction is much better.
There's something slightly neurotic about setting goals.
If you focus on the attainment of a goal and smash it... then what?
You only have to ask high-level athletes who win everything and then struggle mentally what happens if you only ever aim for the completion of goals
Another perspective is to intentionally focus on moving in a positive direction.
I write down a statement of intent instead every day.
Here's a good example of one.
"I AM moving in the direction of more structure and personal responsibility".
Powerful right?
Writing this down somewhere visible reminds you daily of what you are moving towards.
Your daily actions can then be focused in that direction.
Action: Going to bed on time every day.
Supports: Moving in the direction of personal responsibility.
These little daily actions are how you build intention and purpose.
Being intentional is an exercise of will.
You have to use your will to make things happen.
Nothing changes unless you will it to change.
This is what having "willpower" is
So you have...
- Identified your values
- Developed boundaries
- Brought awareness to your brainwashing
- Set a direction of intent
Congratulations 🤩
This is the beginning of living your purpose.
Now before we move on to the next step I didn't say this was going to be easy.
It's difficult to live your purpose and stick to your core values.
why?…
because you'll meet people who aren't living their purpose and they'll hate you for living yours.
It requires a certain type of courage to stick to your values when others compromise on theirs.
I believe in you though.
Anyway ... next...
5/ Stop being so passive
When you let other people dictate your life you'll always be a doormat, susceptible to brainwashing and abuse.
being passive or thinking the universe will gift you an incredible life is magical thinking.
You have to take control.
6/ Get to know yourself
Now this is the part where you really start to understand your "why".
- Turn off the TV
- Put down the phone
and get out of your normal routine and try new things.
+ 10 bonus points if you do them on your own
- Do you really know who you are?
- What sparks your curiosity?
- What do you really love?
You'll only find out if you take action and DO new things.
It'll be tough at first but oh man is it rewarding.
I became a creator by trying it out as I saw people like me doing it successfully.
The more stuff you try out the greater the chance you have of finding your purpose.
After trying various activities something will just click..
It's hard to describe but when it happens...
you'll know
and when it does?
You get after it.🔥
7/ Stop being so nice
Let me tell you that being a nice guy is the perfect setup for catastrophe and a wasted life.
Nice is not a value you should strive for and you need to hear this.
Being too nice is the recipe for disaster.
- You will compromise on your values
- This will breed resentment
- You'll overgive
- You'll burnout
You can do nice things of course but not 24/7
Kind > Nice
8/ Tell the truth
We live in a society that rewards fakeness with attention and likes.
You can't live your purpose if you live in a fake reality and it will eventually make you sick.
It's like choosing the matrix over being neo and who the fuck would do that?
An antidote to this BS is to adopt a discipline of rigorous self-honesty.
Remind yourself that it’s ok for you
- to like what you like
- to disagree with others
- to want what you want
It’ll keep you grounded in reality as its so easy to follow the crowd.
Man.... you made it this far but I am so proud of you.
So now you're here and you know your purpose.
Get out there and live it!.
